An Independent, Coed, Friends School, Nursery Through Grade 12

Arboretum

The purpose of The Arboretum at Moses Brown is to enhance, maintain, study and celebrate the trees and woody plants on the school’s 43-acre campus.

The Arboretum includes many mature trees and shrubs, particularly a variety of stately oaks and beeches; one European beech is among the oldest trees in Providence, according to the Rhode Island Tree Council. Among the younger trees on the campus, forty have been planted in honor of faculty and staff with thirty years or more of service to the school; a variety of memorial trees and gardens are also located around the campus. In line with its mission to “instill the utmost care for learning, people, and place,” the Arboretum provides educational opportunities for its current students, faculty, and staff while also celebrating the rich heritage of the school.

As of April 2022, 91 species of trees and woody plants have been identified and labeled on the school’s campus. Forty-nine of the trees have been planted either as memorial trees or in honor of faculty/staff members with 30+ years of service at Moses Brown; other trees/woody plants were identified and labeled during Arbor Day events on April 30, 2021 and April 29, 2022.

Moses Brown’s Sustainability Committee acts as the governing group for the school’s arboretum. The Sustainability Committee includes faculty members from all three divisions, the student co-clerks of the Upper School Environmental Council, staff members, the head of 明陞体育m88's Sage Dining, and members of the senior administrative staff.
